When do you need a dental implant? In general, dental implants may be right for you if you: Have one or more missing teeth. Have a jawbone that's reached full growth. Have adequate bone to secure the implants or are able to have a bone graft.

Indications You May Need a Dental Implant

Tooth loss is a common problem we all face at various times throughout our lives. Whether it is from non-restorable decay (cavity), severe gum disease, a failed root canal or accidentally being damaged beyond repair, the loss of a single tooth or multiple teeth can have dramatic and lasting effects on your pearly whites if not dealt with in a timely manner. Left untreated, gaps in your smile can not only appear unsightly, they can also lead to further problems through a cascade of negative events one might not be aware of.

What happens if you don't get dental implants?

When you don't replace a missing tooth, it can result in damage to adjacent teeth by causing gum recession and bone loss around those teeth. It can cause your other teeth to wear prematurely. You may experience difficulty eating and speaking, shifting teeth, jaw aches, and headaches.

As always, prevention is the best bet. But as noted earlier, at some point throughout our lives it's inevitable. You will lose one or more teeth for whatever reason. So what to do? It's simple: Replace them! But with what? A fixed bridge? A removable partial denture? Dental implants? What is the best solution? The best way to find the right solution for your personal case, is going to your dentist. He or She is the only person how really can tell you what do you need. Implant, Fixed Bridge or a Crown.

Special instruments are necessary to clean dental implants that will not damage their metal surface beneath the gum tissues. Your dentist will need to monitor your implants to make sure the integrity of the osseointegration is stable, and that the implant crowns, bridgework or dentures are functioning adequately.
